Eye Control Displays Powered by AEye Technology December 12, 2013

Real World Applications Powered By Sight

Mesa, AZ  —  The next decade will be about the technology we never see but which improves the entire user experience. Natural user interface (NUI) technologies – Touch, voice, and gesture – have been revolutionizing human-machine interaction. Now imagine an interface so intuitive that you simply look at the objects you want to select or open.

A broad new range of products will now be able to incorporate eye control thanks to the new “AEye” technology from EyeTech.

AEye Technology

The AEye technology consists of a compact camera board which contains its own internal processor using the Xilinx Zynq System on Chip (SoC), combined with the world’s most robust eye tracking algorithm. The AEye hardware is suitable for computer displays, TVs, laptops, and other devices appropriate for this form factor. For more challenging form factors (e.g. smart phones) the algorithm can be licensed and run on the internal hardware.

Also shown at CES 2014 will be several, real-world, applications from EyeTech partners which have worked with EyeTech’s experienced engineering team to embed eye tracking technology into their products.

Come see how EyeTech is:

About EyeTech

Eye tracking based on video and infrared technology has been around for several decades, but is currently undergoing a revolution due to the greatly increased capability of low-cost processing hardware and sensors. EyeTech has been on the leading edge of this revolution to bring advanced eye tracking systems to customers since 1996. Our proprietary algorithms take advantage of the latest advances in processing hardware and offer an extremely robust eye tracking experience. Some of our “firsts”:

  • Dramatically lowering the price of eye tracking systems.
  • The first “eye mouse” device to run on Windows.
  • The first compact eye tracking module to be used as an “add-on” to tablets and PCs.
  • The first compact USB eye tracker.
  • The first, high accuracy, long-distance eye tracker
  • AEye technology – unprecedented power and performance in a compact form factor.
  • Windows and Android compatibility

Come experience eye tracking at CES 2014 at the LVCC South Hall, Booth 25635.

Attend EyeTech’s press conference to see the unveiling of the new AEye technology at LVCC S227-B on January 7, 2014 from 11am to 12pm.

Crystal Cabin Award Winning In-flight Entertainment Uses Eye Tracking May 15, 2013

MESA, AZ – EyeTech Digital Systems announces their collaboration with award-winning in-flight entertainment company, Thales In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity. Thales won a coveted Crystal Cabin Award for their “Eye Tracking and Gesture Control” system, which allows passengers to control the entertainment system using eye movements and hand gestures. EyeTech provided Thales with eye tracking hardware, software, and engineering integration support for their touch-free entertainment system, which ultimately won the 2013 Crystal Cabin Award for Passenger Comfort Systems.

“We have chosen EyeTech Digital Systems as our Eye Tracking Development Partner for their expertise and advanced engineering skills in developing the next generation of custom eye tracking system that meets our requirements and exceeds our expectations,” said Brett Bleacher, Director of Innovations/R&D at Thales.

The combination of eye tracking and control technologies in seat-back entertainment systems is very user friendly, eliminating the need to continually look down at a remote control.  “Eye tracking is a great solution for the seat configurations found in premium, first, and business class aircraft, whereby the passenger cannot reach the display touchscreen in front of them as it is too far away. It also keeps all the passenger’s controls within the same visual screen whereby the passenger does not have to keep looking down at small remote controller and back up to the big screen in front of them to control their menu which can be very annoying,” Bleacher explained.

EyeTech’s engineering team has provided Thales with advanced technical support and continues to work with Thales in bringing eye tracking systems to the air. EyeTech’s Director of Interactive Displays, Cody Hallett, notes, “I am thrilled that Thales has won the 2013 Crystal Cabin Award.  Working with the team at Thales makes me believe all the more that eye tracking is positioned to become the ‘next big thing’ in human computer interaction.”

The Crystal Cabin Award is the only international prize for innovations in aircraft cabin design. Seven awards were presented in 2013.

QuickLINK 2 Eye Tracking API Released July 30, 2012

Developing your own custom eye tracking application has never been easier with the new release of the QuickLINK 2 API 2.5.

Click Here to download QuickLINK 2 version 2.5 and read a brief overview of the new features included.

The data output through the API includes statistics for each eye, including:

  • X, Y gaze position (on-screen and off screen)
  • Pupil Position
  • Pupil Diameter (mm)
  • Time Stamp
  • Glint Position on Pupil
  • Eye Found

Quick Link enables software engineers to seamlessly write in most programming languages.

Written in standard C style DLL, QuickLINK 2 allows for easy use and interaction with a variety of other software programs.

Over the past decade many companies have integrated eye tracking seamlessly into their own application using EyeTech’s powerful and user-friendly Quick Link 2 API.

Eye Tracking API, Eye Tracker API for Developers

A Visual Studio 2008 example project is included to help developers quickly learn how to use QuickLINK 2. The sample project contains a few different files to demonstrate the main functionality of QuickLINK 2. These files include:

  • Calibrate.cpp – This contains the process for calibrating.
  • DisplayImage.cpp – This contains the process for getting frames from a device and displaying them.
  • Initialize.cpp – This contains the process for getting a device ready to use.
  • Main.cpp – This contains the process for starting the device and getting frame data.
  • OpencvUtility.cpp – This contains common drawing functions used by functions in other files.
  • QL2Utility.cpp – This contains a small class that helps with explicit loading and unloading of the API.

The sample project relies on OpenCV for displaying graphical output. QuickLINK 2 does not use OpenCV, so the OpenCV DLLs in the /bin and /bin64 folders are only there for the purpose of running the sample application.

“At the EMIIE lab from the School of Interactive Arts and Technology of Simon Fraser University, we are using the Eye Tech TM3 eye tracker for our video-game research studies.

Click here for the entire white paper.

Connecting the TM3 to a computer is just a simple plug-in. Creating projects and the calibration process are also very straight forward procedures, making it possible to start working with it promptly.

We extended the default set-up with a video splitter to employ the TM3 for user experience studies with game consoles, specifically the Xbox 360. This allowed us to maintain the fast, high definition video performance expected for a natural video game environment while capturing the video footage and eye tracking data. Video games are fast and demanding applications that the TM3 handled efficiently.

We were pleased that the TM3 is able to capture participants’ gaze very well regardless of facial features, eye colour, or use of eye-glasses, which helps maintain diverse representative samples for research purposes while offering a highly reliable data collection.”

EyeTech will be demonstrating EyeTech’s Quick Link API and Quick Capture gaze analysis software which comes standard with purchase of an eye tracking system developer kit. This enables developers to integrate eye tracking into their own applications.

Quick Capture gaze analysis software is designed for small research projects of static images or videos to capture eye gaze data in real time. Inside the software there are three tabs (capture, playback, and slideshow). The capture and playback tabs enable researchers to save the data to a file or play it back in real time to analyze gaze patterns of small groups. The software is ideal of analyzing regions of interest on static images for product packaging, website landing pages, print advertising, billboards, etc. and is also convenient for analyzing commercials and movie trailers.

Quick Link API allows developers to integrate eye tracking into their own applications. Some of the data accessible through the API include: X,Y gaze position for each eye, pupil size, time stamp and other valuable eye metrics which are fully accessible for developers to use at their convenience in real time. The software is written in a standard C style DLL which allows for easy use with almost any programming language. Over the past decade many companies have integrated eye tracking seamlessly into their own application using EyeTech’s powerful and easy to use Quick Link API.

EyeTech TM4 USB Eye Tracker January 26, 2010

EyeTech Digital Systems announces a milestone in the accessibility of eye tracking technology for the disabled.  The new system is powered through a computer’s USB 2.0 port instead of a fire wire port.  This means eye tracking is no longer tethered to a power outlet since this new USB capability can power the eye tracker using the computer’s battery.

This new advance clears the way to much greater portability. The TM4 measures a slim 28x4x4.5cm and can easily attach to a desktop, laptop or tablet PC, allowing better access to a larger selection of communication devices.

“Our new TM4 eye tracker continues the accuracy and usability of the TM3 while offering the lowest power consumption, the smallest form factor, and the most simplicity of any eye tracker on the market.  The USB interface enables connection to a larger number of PCs and speech devices,”

-          Robert Chappell, CEO of EyeTech Digital Systems.
