Guests love the Eye Tracker exhibit at MOSI. It is part of our new permanent exhibition, The Amazing You, on health and wellness through life’s stages. The exhibit speaks to how we use our eyes, how we perceive the world around us, and how cutting edge technology can be used as an interface with the real world. Aside from the revealing fun it is to see where your eyes travel across various images, this exhibit also covers topics of how disabled people can use this technology to interact with everyday objects, such as looking at a light switch on a wheelchair-mounted monitor to turn on the room lights. The text also speaks to how marketing firms use this technology to determine if people really do look at the product they are advertising in an ad.
MOSI looked at a number of options of eye tracking technology for this exhibit and settled on Eye Tech Digital Systems Inc for their great product that could be adapted to the museum environment. Eye Tech generously worked with MOSI to make this exhibit work smoothly for our museum guests. Eye Tech modified their software and stayed working with us until we were all satisfied that this would be an exhibit we could all be proud of. The guest just sits down, rests their chin on the rest, and the system does the rest. It instantly recognizes a person present, walks them through an easy calibration of their eyes, and has them looking at images in a few seconds. Guest feedback has been very positive with many comments about how “cool” this is.
