8/23/07 Jesse is our wonderful 9 year old son. He has Cerebral Palsy. Because of his condition it has been very difficult for Jesse to communicate effectively. He starts regular third grade this fall. He is very smart and we have been frustrated by not finding a modality adequate for Jesse’s communication needs. Up until recently Jesse has been using a variety of switches with sequencing software. This has resulted in only a mediocre method of communication as his impaired motor skills make using the switches difficult to use. In addition, the sequencing software is laborious, time consuming and frustrating especially when you miss the selection and have to wait for it to go around again.For the last six months Jesse has been using the Eye Tech hardware with the Dynavox software which is the same software that he was using with the switches. We have found that it is a much simpler method of controlling the mouse and also allows him to take advantage of direct select which has been a major obstacle in the past. We of course are still working on improving his motor and verbal skills to someday make the use of this device unnecessary but until we reach that goal we have found the eye gaze technology vastly superior the anything else. In a very short time he has exceeded his abilities over the switch/sequencing technology. Although Jesse has not mastered this yet we look forward to the time that he will be able to construct entire sentences (and email!) and be able to communicate all that is in and on his mind.
